Open traditional music sessions in Café De Zaaier

Every first Sunday of the month a diverse group of musicians gathers in Café De Zaaier in Wageningen to play traditional music from all over the world. Although most of the regular crowd plays French, Irish, or Dutch music, one of the nice things about Wageningen is that the whole world might just drop by. We are happy to have heard music from Afghanistan, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Eritrea, and many other countries, over the years that this session exists.

That means that everybody who plays an instrument or is able to sing is welcome to join us! We welcome musicians from all traditions and all levels. We only observe the following rules to prevent the session from descending into chaos:

  • We play 'around the table': all musicians get a chance to start a tune or a song.
  • There is no pressure to play something brilliant, but if you play, you play. It is better to play something simple you feel confident with than to play something difficult that you have to start over and over again.
  • You are welcome to join somebody else's tune or song, but don't forget to also listen. If you don't know the tune or the song, it is very likely better that you just sit back, relax, and enjoy the music!

Curious about our tunes? Check the Zaaier canon! Available in ABC (click here to find out what that is) and in PDF.

We start at 16.00 and we mostly play until 19.00 or 20.00. The pub is on Herenstraat 33 in Wageningen.

You can also subscribe to our mailing list. You will then receive a reminder a week in advance (that is, if I don't forget to send it - sorry!). Also, if a session is cancelled or moved to another date, this mailing list is the way to be informed.

Be aware that I have nothing to do with De Zaaier itself. If you are a musician looking for a gig, or a visitor of De Zaaier and you want to contact the pub, please send them a direct e-mail: dezaaier@yahoo.co.uk.
